In Craven County, SC supply chain issues have affected school lunches. To cope with these supply chain limitations, school administrators are looking outside the lunch box. They’re enlisting the help of area merchants to create healthful meals that children will be happy to consume.
For parents, kids, and staff members, more than 13 different food vendors gave samples. Students were able to vote on what they wanted to eat, and staff members were able to learn about what was available.
One mom said that her children would return home and complain about how bad lunch was. She is not alone; other parents have had similar experiences. Some kids bring their lunch to avoid the currently available meals.
Because of supply chain difficulties, Craven County Schools nutrition director Lauren Weyand says the district has been unable to get a variety of foods for months. They’ve had a hard time getting a lot of protein foods.
To address their concerns, Craven County school officials are conducting a nutrition fair, with local vendors bringing foods that they CAN get.
The event, according to Weyand, is also intended to get input from students in order to bring in foods that they would like. The samples are a hit with the youngsters. Even the area high schools are participating in the program.
